Understanding and Managing Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

October 7, 2025/by admin

Why saliva matters:
Saliva protects your teeth, gums, and overall health. It helps wash away food, neutralize acids, support your oral microbiome, and keep your mouth comfortable. When saliva flow is reduced, problems like cavities, gum disease, bad breath, mouth infections, and even poor sleep can follow.

✅ Common Causes of Dry Mouth

  • Medications (blood pressure, antidepressants, allergy meds, pain relievers, bladder meds, etc.)
  • Mouth breathing (often linked to allergies, nasal obstruction, or sleep-disordered breathing)
  • Smoking or vaping
  • Alcohol or caffeine overuse
  • Systemic conditions (diabetes, thyroid issues, autoimmune disease such as Sjögren’s syndrome, HIV)
  • Cancer treatment (head & neck radiation, certain chemotherapies)
  • Dehydration & lifestyle factors (not enough fluids, high physical activity)
  • Stress & anxiety (temporary saliva reduction in “fight or flight” states)
  • Age & multiple medications (common in older adults)

⚠️ Symptoms You Might Notice

  • Constant dryness or sticky feeling in the mouth
  • Frequent thirst
  • Trouble chewing, swallowing, or tasting food
  • Burning sensations or sore tissues
  • Bad breath
  • More cavities than usual
  • Dentures not fitting well
  • Cracks at the corners of lips
  • Restless sleep or waking up with a dry mouth

💡 How We Can Help at Harvard Rd Dental Care

Our team takes dry mouth seriously because your oral health and overall health are connected.

Here’s how we can help:

  • Thorough exam & health review – to identify medications, lifestyle factors, or medical conditions that may be the cause.
  • Prevention & protection – fluoride varnish, prescription-strength toothpaste, sealants, and custom trays to protect enamel.
  • Stimulation strategies – sugar-free xylitol gum or mints to encourage saliva flow.
  • Airway & breathing evaluation – to address mouth breathing and sleep-related causes; referrals for myofunctional therapy, ENT evaluation, or sleep studies when needed.
  • Specialized care – treatment for thrush or infections; coordination with your physician if Sjögren’s, diabetes, or other systemic conditions are suspected.
  • Personalized care plan – every patient’s dry mouth is different, so we tailor prevention and treatment to your needs.

✨ Remember: Dry mouth is not just uncomfortable — it’s a sign your mouth and body may need attention. By finding the why, we can protect your smile and help you feel healthier every day

✨ Your mouth is the gateway to your health — and saliva is one of its best defenses.
